Education fosters progressivism through promoting equal opportunity and the flow of information. In a progressive society, education is at the core and promotes active citizenship. Promoting political participation was one of the major goals of the first progressive movement, and progressives today should not forget that education is the best and most inclusive way of doing this. The progressive movement is one focused on the future. Education’s essential purpose is nurturing the future by broadening the minds and developing the talents of every member of society. Education in America is not doing this today because of massive inequalities in both the availability and quality of educational opportunities. Franklin D. Roosevelt said that, “Knowledge – that is, education in its true sense- is our best protection against unreasoning prejudice and panic-making fear, whether engendered by special interest , illiberal minorities, or panic-panic stricken leaders”. The need for a tolerant, compassionate, and hopeful society has not lessened any since the days of FDR and it is time to take a closer look at the question of education.
