---LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS---
---BLOG---

Date: September 7th, 2007.
Author: Kevin J. Powers

Welcome to the Legislative Affairs Blog!

I'm Kevin Powers, UC Davis' Director of Legislative Affairs, and I hope that you've taken a few minutes to look around the Leg Affairs site. It's the product of my complete lack of Website-building knowledge, so please be sympathetic to the fact that I don't know what I'm doing-at least concerning the deign of the website itself.

Something I do know a thing or two about is Legislative Affairs. It's "what I do" in Roosevelt, and I'm of the opinion that Legislative issues need to be one of our top priorities in the upcoming year. As such, I've designed(...) this website to serve as a resource not only to Davis Fellows and Associates, but to anyone who is doing legislative work in California.

On our "Resources" site, you'll find an (increasing) list of legislative organizational charts and information, from the State Legislature right down to the campus level. While most of this information is applicable primarialy to Davis, the organizational design remains constant for most of the governments at the city and county level. Trust me, understanding how a system works is the first step to effectively marketing Roosevelt ideas.

In the future, Roosevelt Members, Associates, and Fellows can expect to see a Legislative Resource page that will include rundowns of the legislative process from a political science perspective (yeah, super-basic spatial modeling and game theory explained. AHHH!), Effective "Talking points" when in legislative meetings, and a clear explanation of what we can & can't do as a 501(c)(3) Non-profit.

Besides being Davis' Legislative Affairs guy, I also wear the [funny-looking] hat of Western Regional Legislative Director. That means, basically, that I'M HERE TO HELP PEOPLE! Working with career politicians can be both intimidating and really uncomfortable, and I know this as I do it for a living. But friends, how are we supposed to change the world if we can't work with the people that write the legislation?

We've got the ideas, and we have the drive. Let's go out and get the votes.

Stay tuned,

Kevin Powers
Legislative Director, Western Region
Director, UC Davis Legislative Affairs
Fellow, UC Davis Center on Peace and Security Studies

P.S. - Standby for UC Davis' first podcast! We're recording tomorrow, and we expect to have a new one up each week. The topic, you ask? The issue of Intelligence Reform in the United States.

You'll be able to download our podcasts from iTunes, as we do everything with the student in mind. I know nothing is more awesome than walking to class with your iPod in hand, listening to Roosevelt Fellows discus the issues of our day. Ah, more refreshing than a big cup of coffee!
