This August, the Roosevelt Institution brought the top student policy minds from across the country to Washington, DC to present their work, discuss the problems facing our generation, and commit to devoting their energy to finding progressive solutions.
The Roosevelt Policy Expo was an enormous success. More than 200 students, educators, and young professionals attended not only to hear the compelling address from Senator Dick Durbin, John Podesta, and the student presenters, but also to join in the discussion about the issues facing our generation. Tackling issues from climate change to civic engagement, from healthcare to education, presenters and attendees jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with so many fellow visionaries.
Breaking out of the traditional conference format, the culmination of the Expo was the selection of one of this year's three Roosevelt Challenges. Attendees broke into discussion groups, all returning with a potential Challenge in their issue area. After a lively debate with the entire plenary and a round of preliminary voting, a final vote was held to determine the winner. Attendees voted with their commitments—the more they pledged to do to support the Challenges, the more votes the were able to cast.
After all votes were counted, the first of three Challenges for the schools year emerged as an overwhelming winner:
For the academic year 2006-2007, using public policy as their vehicle, the Roosevelt Institution challenges students to reduce our dependence on foreign, harmful, and unsustainable energy.
