Message to Chapter Leaders from Assembly Chair Alicia Raia:

April 21, 2006
Dear Chapter Leaders,

From a group of ambitious college students to a nationwide network of dedicated chapters, the Roosevelt Institution has grown and thrived on the imagination, passion and drive of its student leaders.

Last August some of these leaders gathered in the birthplace and estate of a namesake of our organization, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, for our first annual assembly in Hyde Park. It’s now your turn to attend an event overflowing with infectious energy, and brimming with the hope and possibilities our passion holds.

The Roosevelt Institution chapter assembly is the main decision-making body of RI, and the mechanism by which students determine the direction and focus of our student community.

The assembly will be an opportunity for delegates and guests to capitalize on the resources of their peers. During this invaluable networking opportunity, insight and experiences will be exchanged and collaborations will be set into motion for the coming year. The assembly will be an opportunity to dream big, envisioning RI’s future and reflecting on our common progressive goals and aspirations.

During chapter plenary proceedings, voting chapter delegates direct Roosevelt's future by making critical decisions about the organization's operations and growth.

The plenary's charges include:
  • Selecting a Student Oversight Committee to represent their interests in between annual sessions;
  • Choosing policy challenges that will frame the organization’s policy priorities for the following year;
  • Ratifying any changes in the governing documents of the organization.

Each eligible chapter is invited to send two voting delegates, and per RI bylaws this delegation must be gender-balanced. Voting delegates should be chosen by their chapters on a need-blind basis, as financial aid for travel expenses are available. Lodging and meals are provided by our sponsor and host, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (FERI). The 2006 assembly will begin on August 4 and conclude August 6.

To nominate delegates for the event, please refer to the attached applications, using the delegate application for voting representatives, and the non-voting application for outstandingly dedicated chapter members outside of the voting delegation (acceptance of these delegates will be selective and is not guaranteed).

RI suggests that chapters choose younger delegates who have illustrated their commitment to the organization and their understanding of its principles. Conference organizers will contact selected participants regarding transportation options, meal preferences, and other specifics.

Please email hydepark@rooseveltinstitution.org with any questions about the event. Applications are due to the same address by Friday, May 5, at 5:00 p.m. E.S.T.

FDR once aptly stated that, “Happiness…lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.” We look forward to having your chapter’s representatives join us to celebrate a year of growth and achievements, and to partake in our exciting effort to continue moving forward.
