"You get more joy out of the giving to others, and should put a good deal of thought into the happiness you are able to give."

Devlin-Foltz Conducts Workshop on Effective Political Communication

STANFORD, California - March 2 - David Devlin-Foltz, the Director of the Global Interdependence Initiative at the Aspen Institute, spoke to Roosevelt’s Center Directors about how to teach the American public about policy. According to Devlin-Foltz, the American public can and should participate in foreign policy decisions. He used his research on effective foreign policy communication to present 'big ideas' that the American public responds to, and he called upon the Roosevelt Institution to tap into these ideas to make its audiences more receptive to policy recommendations. He also responded to directors’ questions, whose topics ranged from communication strategies to the ethics of political parties’ communication tactics.

Robert Samet, director of the Center on the Media, put the event into perspective, saying: "David’s ideas reminded me that developing policy is only half of Roosevelt’s job. Our success as a think tank depends on our ability to make people care about what we have to say."
