Roosevelt Institution to hold conference at Hunter College

Diversity Conference:

Exploring Diversity and Race in the Policy Making Process  

New York, NY: In America today each community, school and family is a mixture of races infinitely more diverse than the nation founded by our forefathers so many years ago. This being the case we cannot help but wonder about the underrepresentation of minorities in the political world.  On Friday, March 28^th, from 12-5pm , the Hunter College chapter of the Roosevelt Institution will be hosting a day-long northeast regional conference discussing diversity and race in the policymaking process.

The conference, co-sponsored by the center for Social Inclusion, The Drum Major Institute, the Applied Research Center, City College, NYU and Columbia chapters of the Roosevelt Institution, will explore the barriers to participation in policymaking.  The conference will focus on the effect of structural racism on the policymaking process, and will engage students through workshops and breakout sessions.  This conference is open to everyone and community members are encouraged to join the discussion. 

The Roosevelt Institution has a network of over 8000 students, professors and policymakers at more than 70 campus-based chapters across the country.  Founded after the 2004 elections, the Institution has grown into a comprehensive center for students interested in public policy, offering internship programs, several national journals, conferences, and training workshops throughout the year.  Now partnered with the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, this nonprofit student think tank seeks to build new progressive leaders with outstanding ideas for the future.

The conference will involve the participation of several community group members and members of the New York City Council and State Legislature.
