ADVISORY: The Roosevelt Institution Teams Up with FDR Library
WASHINGTON, DC—The Roosevelt Institution has announced a new partnership with FERI, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, which is the private counterpart to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, NY. The Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute functions as the Library’s private sector partner, frequently working with the Library to produce conferences and education programs.
The Roosevelt Institution is a non-profit, non-partisan national network of campus-based student think tanks. Since 2004, The Roosevelt Institution has empowered college students to research and write policy, then connect that policy to local, state, and federal government. The Roosevelt Institution’s founders chose a name that reflected the values of the “Progressive” movement of the 20th century—values that they believe live on in contemporary student culture. “The merger helps connect our student members to both the historical legacy of our namesakes and the important role New Deal policies continue to play in Washington and in our country today,” said Nate Loewentheil, Executive Director of the Roosevelt Institution.
Founded in 1987, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute works to bring contemporary relevance to the history of the Roosevelt era. Through commemoration of the significant events of that period, support of current scholarship, and promotion of teacher training and curriculum development, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute informs new generations of the ideals and achievements of the Roosevelts. As a complement to this mission, the Roosevelt Institution will perpetuate the Roosevelts’ progressive policy legacy through direct participation in public policy.
“By bringing this dynamic group of young people into the organization, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute will expand its mission in a tangible way, furthering the policy legacy of the Roosevelts and inspiring future generations to progressive action,” said Christopher N. Breiseth, President and CEO of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute.
The founders of the Roosevelt Institution conceived its model to train and empower students in the policymaking process and to effect real change in American politics. These founding members understood the need for a student voice in the policymaking process, from the genesis of ideas in academia to their implementation through local, state and national governments. Since its inception, the Roosevelt Institution has ballooned to almost 7,000 student members nationwide. Together, these students publish numerous policy and research journals, advance dozens of legislative goals, and hold countless meetings, panels and conferences every year.
