STANFORD, California - March 3 - The Roosevelt Institution Centers on International Development, Democracy and Health and on International Security co-sponsored a discussion with John Prendergast, Special Adviser to the President of the International Crisis Group, about policy recommendations to the United States government regarding the genocide in Darfur. Fellows from the two centers presented a draft of their ideas to Mr. Prendergast, and Mr. Prendergast responded with comments, criticisms, and suggestions; eventually fellows will send a final, three-page policy paper to Condoleezza Rice, the United States Secretary of State. After a well-received campus wide lecture on the Darfur crisis, Prendergast joined Roosevelt fellows at 10 o'clock at night, and discussion continued until nearly midnight. The discussion was structured around three major actors in the Darfur crisis: the United States, the African Union, and the European Union. Center fellows acted as spokespeople, presenting the group's ideas: John Kang presented recommendations for United States policy, Cassidy Deline presented offered recommendations for the African Union, and Richard Vaughn and Julia Spiegel presented the centers' suggestions for European policy. After policy recommendations for each actor were presented, Prendergast commented on the centers' ideas and responded to further comments and questions. Rachel Linn, a member of the Center on International Development, Democracy and Health said that Prendergast’s comments "provided a great deal of insight that will be of significant aid to the centers in constructing our final policy proposal." Revisions of the centers' initial ideas are already underway.
