The St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center started its annual Table of Plenty Food Drive Sunday and has already collected more than 100 cans, according to sophomore Molly Minea, peer minister and coordinator for the Newman Center.
The drive is a competition between Greek life, residence halls, university departments and student organizations.
Cans and other non-perishable food items are being collected to donate to the St. Therese Center in Henderson, a non-profit center that helps more than 3,000 families per month who are affected and/or infected by HIV/AIDS, according to Minea.
The center is sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas and started in 1998. St. Rose Dominican hospital provides space for the center, which is open to anyone and gives free food and clothes everyday.
Minea said the food drive for the center is especially important during the holiday season because the food supply gets completely wiped out and needs to be restocked frequently.
Last year, the food drive collected approximately 3,000 cans, and Minea said the goal for this year is 4,000.
Greek life won last year’s competition, with a large amount of cans donated by Delta Zeta, Minea added.
The drive will run through Dec. 17, and whichever group collects the most cans will receive a plaque from the Newman Center.
>>>Think tank to hold debut
The Roosevelt Institution will hold its debut event at UNLV on Nov. 12. Students and faculty alike are invited to hear how the Roosevelt Institution is going to close the divide between academia and policymaking.
UNLV students have launched a chapter of the Roosevelt Institution, the nation’s first student think tank, aimed at tapping the unused resource of students’ policy research and broadcasting it to the public.
“We are determined to help correct people’s misconceptions and to offer new hope to UNLV students and then eventually the community,” said Roosevelt Institution at UNLV Communications Director Crystal Boyd.
The Roosevelt Institution is a national network of student chapters spread across 66 universities from Stanford to Yale.
