2008-2009
Membership rising: More students are interested in the MSU Roosevelt Institution. The Center for Energy and the Environment has begun our thought process for the academic year of 2008-2009. As we look forward to the ideas the group will raise and study, interest levels have raised for more students around campus!
Putting words into actions: encouraging off-campus recycling in East Lansing! The members of the Center for Energy and the Environment are active on MSU's campus. East Lansing is equipped with an excellent curbside recycling program. However, we have found that students are not taking full advantage of this program. Why not? Students have found that the City office is open at times that conflict with class schedules and is located in a part of the city that must be reached by car.
We are solving this challenge by bringing recycling bins to students. Therefore, we are working to reinforce the community's attitude to go green and recycle.
Fall Policy Expo Come check out a review of last year's Center for Energy and the Environment published policies that will be highlighted at the MSU RI Fall Policy Expo.
This event will take place at Case Hall, MSU on September 26, 2008. Contact Dan Blue, dan.blue@rooseveltinstitution.org for more information.
2007-2008 Highlights
For the 2007-2008 academic year, the Center for Energy and the Environment studied the prospects of wind energy as a supplemental renewable energy source for the state of Michigan.
October 2007: Three of the Michigan State University Roosevelt students had the opportunity to attend the Roosevelt | Energy Conference at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The perspectives discussed at this conference served as an informational and as well as an inspirational factor to our energy studies. November 2007: The Center for Energy and Environment meets with the State of Michigan Office of the Governor to discuss current gubernatorial energy initiatives for the state.
November 2007: As our project research leads us to redefine our focus, we are collaborating with our Economic Center in order to complete an analysis of Michigan wind energy as it is relevant to the economics of this state.
March 2008: "Michigan Wind Energy: An Assessment and Future Policy Implications" was featured in the "Great Stakes for the Great Lakes" publication through the Midwestern Region of the Roosevelt Institution. The research within the report was presented at the Great Stakes for the Great Lakes conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan on March 28, 2008. The PDF version of the entire publication is available here.
July 2008: J. Cory Connolly was published in the 25 Ideas series on Community Development. His policy idea outlined the opportunities to be gained by integrating small wind turbines and public schools. A PDF of the entire publication, including Cory's piece, is available here.Group members: Olivia M Cohn Brian W Bartle Dan Blue Kyle S Bryan Dave Carlson Andy M Cease Bryce G Colquitt J.
