Legislative Strategist
Coming up with a smart legislative outreach strategy is crucial to the mission of the Roosevelt Institution. You will help prioritize our policy agenda, identify new targets for legislative education and outreach, and work with our communications department to promote Roosevelt fellows’ ideas. Since the Roosevelt Institution’s greatest strengths lie in local politics, much of your attention will be devoted to the states and major city councils. Some national campaigns may be developed and executed, but your first responsibility is to develop new avenues for our students and chapters to utilize.
Requirements: -Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student -Available to work a minimum of 12-15 hours per week (varies with legislative schedule) -Prior experience in advocacy, student organizing, or legislative offices is preferred but not required. -Some travel (paid for by Roosevelt) will be required during the academic year. -Commitment and ability to turn work around quickly. Legislative strategy is often determined with long-term vision, but must also be able to respond to immediate crises and new information.
To apply, email a resume and cover letter explaining your interest in the position to applications@rooseveltinstitution.org. Please include your name and the position you are applying for in the subject line of your email. The deadline to apply is July 1st, 2008.
Policy Strategist
Description: Developing innovative policy solutions to major problems is at the core of a think tank’s mission. As a policy strategist, you will help to recruit, train, and improve student policy ideas in a variety of issue areas. Though a high level of expertise is not required, your prior background in a particular policy area will be a strong asset. This position is a blend of the administrative (organizing and recruiting) and the analytical (strategizing and developing new solutions), and a commitment to both is important for your success.
Requirements: -Must be a current student (graduate or undergraduate) -Strong writing and analytical skills -Available for the equivalent of a part-time job (12-15 hours/week), August-May -Time management skills are vital; responding to email and phone calls in a timely manner will be crucial to your success or failure. -Some travel (paid by Roosevelt) will be required during the academic year. You may be asked to speak on a panel for a policy conference, conduct a policy writing workshop for a group of your fellow students, or simply attend a national gathering of the Roosevelt team (where you will make major strategic decisions in concert with your colleagues). Attendance at the annual Policy Expo (usually mid-July) and the Hyde Park conference (usually mid-August) is mandatory unless circumstances absolutely prevent it.
To apply, please email applications@rooseveltinstitution.org with your name and ‘Policy Strategist’ in the subject line. The application deadline is July 1st, 2008.
National Editorial Board
We are looking for three motivated students to join the National Editorial Board. The Editorial Board is a group of 10 student policy experts which evaluates the policy work submitted the various Roosevelt publications or partnerships (25 Ideas Series, Roosevelt Review, Think International, Harvard Law and Policy Review Online, regional publications, etc.). Because these publications serve as the basis for Roosevelt legislative outreach and advocacy efforts, it is responsible for selecting and editing the work that represents Roosevelt. To do so, we need the best set of Editors that we can find, and we would like our Board to reflect the diversity of our membership (i.e. we would like to have applications from everywhere, not from a small set of chapters). The position does require a significant time commitment (avg. 5-10 hrs/week).Click here to download the application. Please submit applications to applications@rooseveltinstitution.org with the phrase “Editorial Board Application” in the subject line, and attach a résumé as well. Applications are due by July 1st, 2008.
