The Roosevelt Institution

General Submission Guidelines

http://rooseveltinstitution.org/publications/ti/tisubmissions

Submissions should be sent here and should include the type of article in the subject line. Please be sure to include your name, school, and whether your school has a Roosevelt chapter.

Background Pieces, ~1500 words (1-2 per issue)

Background pieces should provide readers of Think International with the information they need to understand the rest of the issue. They should give background on the thematic focus of the issue by explaining both the historical context and the current significance of the topic.

This article, published in Foreign Affairs, is a good example of the type of article which we are looking for. The author gives a concise and objective history of the legal use of the term genocide and then analyzes the impacts of such use. However, it is much longer than what we expect.

Opinion Columns, ~700 words (3-4 per issue)

Opinion columns will represent the views of the writer, rather than of the Roosevelt Institution. Pieces will focus on one specific policy, topic, country, project, etc. stemming from the theme of the issue. These pieces should evaluate the topic in an objective manner and then offer subjective conclusions. They are shorter because they need to be as timely as possible and the authors of these pieces should be ready to update their pieces on short notice.

Here is an example of the type of column we are looking for published by the Century Foundation.

Point-Counterpoint, 2,000-2,500 words for a point, 1,500-2,000 for a counterpoint (1-2 per issue)

Every issue will feature at least one point-counterpoint set.  The purpose is to encourage intelligent discourse and acknowledge that there are different means to achieve the same ends. Point-counterpoints will be selected from the responses to these prompts. In some cases, more than two articles may be published depending on the nature of the responses.

Feature-Length Articles, 2,000-3,000 words (2-3 per issue)

Feature articles are independent creative endeavors, displaying the student-author's analytic skills.  These articles will touch on a wide variety of subjects, as they relate to the spotlight topic. These pieces may analyze a current policy or propose a new policy relating to the theme of the issue. These pieces are similar to those published in the Roosevelt Review, but shorter in length. We encourage you to submit work for courses you have taken, but would remind you to update the piece to ensure it reflects recent events and new facts. Furthermore, any submissions are subject to substantial alterations by the editorial board, as are appropriate for a magazine forum as opposed to a graded paper.

Book Reviews, ~500 words (2-3 per issue)

Book reviews should evaluate a recent publication in the context of the author's past work, current events, and its potential impact. We will suggest a few books when each theme is released, but you should feel free to review any book or article which you find relevant.

This review from The New York Times should be a helpful example.
