"You get more joy out of the giving to others, and should put a good deal of thought into the happiness you are able to give."

— Eleanor Roosevelt

Summit on the States

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce you all to each other as best I can.  Below is a list with everyone’s name, contact info, and a brief description of who you are and what you do with Roosevelt.  Where applicable, I’ve listed the policy area that corresponds between your interests and the conference’s agenda.

If any of you are still unfamiliar with the conference schedule and the various panels, please go to http://stateaction.org/events/summit and take a look.  I already have things in mind for most of you, but I would appreciate it if you would indicate anything you’re particularly interested in attending, just in case.  As you can see, some of you will need to attend certain panels (like Jacob for the panel on predatory lending), but there’s a lot of time to fill besides those few hours.  Take a look around and tell me what interests you.  There are some special receptions that some of you might be interested in, too.

I have yet to hear back from the Center for Policy Alternatives about their legislator guest list.  I will forward that info to you as soon as I possibly can.  I should warn you, though, that we might be sitting up together on Friday night doing prep work and familiarizing ourselves with names and bio information.  In the meantime, I strongly suggest that you read the bio info on the panelists (in case I can get you introduced to them, which I hope to do) and brush up on your area of policy expertise and/or oversight.  (This may be a particular area, like healthcare, or a regional perspective, like Maryland’s recent legislative activity.)

Current events are always important to be up on, so if you do nothing else, read the paper every day this week.  You will almost certainly read something that relates directly to your interests, informs your opinion on something that will be discussed here in DC, or just something of interest that will help you make conversation with other conference attendees.  Top picks: Wall Street Journal, NY Times, Washington Post.  Read your local paper as well (Hartford Courant, etc) to see what’s going on in your state capital.

The Center for Policy Alternatives also has an excellent array of resources broken down both by state and by topic.  Simply go to http://stateaction.org to find out what’s been happening – in fact, this may be a better first step than any other.

Call or email me if you have questions related to this email; I will send you more info and details as soon as I can.  (RE travel, some of you will stay with Nate at his home, and others will stay at my house.)  Make sure you bring receipts for your travel so that we can reimburse you here in DC.
