"The giving of love is an education in itself."

— Eleanor Roosevelt

Center on the Environment and Energy

The conservation of our natural resources and their proper use constitute the fundamental problem which underlies almost every other problem of our national life.

-Theodore Roosevelt, 1907

The mission of the Committee on the Environment and Energy at the Roosevelt Institution is to bring progressive environmental and energy-related ideas to all audiences, including those who work at all levels in American political institutions. The Center is composed of a team of dedicated students and citizens of the world, committed to seeing our ideas spread and put into action.

We acknowledge and praise the successes of what has come to be known as the “Environmental Movement,” while realizing that the requirements of sustainability in human development—clean energy, moderation of consumption, maintenance of biodiversity, and many others—have not been met. We recognize that the future of humankind will be in jeopardy until they are met, and believe that enormous and progressive change in policy, both domestic and international, is required to accomplish this undertaking. We believe that our planet’s environmental emergencies demand greater awareness among all of its diverse populations, including the leaders of those populations.

We take the initiative in exploring new realms of thought on every scale, from law to ideology. We encourage the philosophy of interdependence. We view our “environmentalism” as key to the larger progressive movement, and as inextricably tied to all areas of life and policy in the United States and the world. We will seek to embody the ideals of progress and advancement, presenting innovative ideas in innovative forms, bringing them into the policymaking process through the Roosevelt Institution.

Current projects focus on three primary activities:
1) Collaboration with the Green Dorm project to address policy regulations that prevent implementation of energy and water saving technology. In particular, this will address greywater and blackwater treatment technologies, as well as rainwater use in the building.
2) Collaboration with the Education Center to research local environmental education initiatives and programs.
3) Research contribution to a campus climate policy effort spearheaded by Students for a Sustainable Stanford.
