If the digital revolution promised a utopian information-society, in just a few short years the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. Today, one in three high school students believe that the first amendment "goes too far" in protecting our right to free speech, Fox News is assiduously undermining ideals about unbiased journalism, and the White House has turned state propaganda into a blunt instrument. Progressives need a new vision of the media. We need to re-imagine the role of mass media in our society so that we can formulate political strategies that are both effective and ethical. The Center on the Media is dedicated to evolving such a vision and to developing policies that further the cause of democracy and social justice.
