"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

— Franklin Roosevelt

Center on Science, Technology, and Space

"Progress has brought us both unbounded opportunities and unbridled difficulties. Thus the measure of our civilization will not be that we have done much, but what we have done with that much."

-Theodore Roosevelt, 1909

The Center on Science, Technology, and Space believes that technological progress is critical to achieving the universal goals of peace, prosperity, and freedom. It is this desire for knowledge and the quest to explore the unknown that unites our Fellows and drives our achievements.

While medical advancements hold the promise of improving the human condition in unimaginable ways, we must address the ethical decisions that we will inevitably face. While our strong incentives for innovation have produced the most technologically advanced society on earth, we must acknowledge that those who need it the most often receive the least benefit from our progress. While we have the tools to protect ourselves in times of greatest threat, we must realize that these same tools threaten our most core principles - the very freedoms on which we have built our nation.

New ways of thinking are needed to confront these issues. Our Fellows do not shy from the task, and the Center on Science and Technology provides them the resources they need to determine the policies that will shape our technological future.

We are currently pursuing policy research and new ways of thinking on nine topics:

  • Stem cell research
  • Ethics of medical advancement & biotechnology
  • Militarization of space & missile defense
  • Privatization of space access & the changing mission of NASA
  • Technology in national security
  • Revolutionary transportation
  • Intellectual property & privacy
  • Technology in international development
  • Role of government in encouraging innovation
