Hi John Patrick,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I have been very crazed the past couple of days.
Good news. I met with my supervisor today and she was so excited to hear that we are eager to do research on the economic development of New Orleans.
She thought it would be a great idea if the community development group could compose a large survey of students- at Tulane, Loyola, Delgado,UNO, etc.- through myspace or something, to figure out what it is that would keep students in New Orleans after graduation. As most students claim that they would love to stay in New Orleans, but the opportunities just aren't there, she would like to see why. What can LRA do now to develop the economy better to retain the students graduating from the top research universities/colleges within the city?
Along with that, these are the other 3 research topics:
1) Economic anaylsis of current New Orleans recovery. What comes next?
a. Technological spin-offs from the storm? Who is doing it, and is it a place to invest in?
b. Bring New Orleans Back Campaign, economic analysis
c. Unified New Orleans Plan
--what are these plans suggesting that LRA currently is not implementing? to understand this, we need a full understanding of what LRA does. lra.louisiana.gov/ is the website, and this is within the "Economic and Workforce Recovery" section. The main page of LRA will lead to publications of what is going on.
Briefly, the Economic and Workforce Recovery works on these programs:
1. Grant loan program
2. Tech assistance
3. Workforce Recovery
4. Tourism and Marketing
If a group wants to work on this, then I will meet with them nad give them the information I have about what LRA is doing, although it is best for everyone to research it a little themselves so people understand it from all different views.
2) Tech spinoffs from the storm? (ie housing)
a. Who is doing this?
b. Is it a place to invest in?
3) Measure the recovery boom
a. Will it show a boom and then recession/
b. Tracing and dialogue with the city: as the money comes trhough, which parts do we want to hold onto?
This is a lot of information. Whichis why I haven't included any brief papers I wrote. Probably best to start with all this, and then figure out what we want to do and go from there.
Let me know! 8pm on Sunday?
Thanks,
Sam

Hi everyone! For those of you who missed the meeting tonight, but would like to be part of the Education Policy Center we will be meeting every Wednesday night at 8 pm in Room 205 of the UC. For next week I would really appreciate it if all of you could do some general research about the New Orleans Public School system (its history, current efforts, etc.) and if you can, make a list of any ideas that you think would be particularly interesting for policy. Next week we will share all of our information and try to narrow down our ideas. For those of you who want some good places to get started for information check out:

Hi everybody,
Hopefully, you're on this email list because you heard about the Roosevelt Institution, and thought it was very interesting (and very cool? maybe in a nerdy sorta way?). I am asking you all for a favor that may not seem big to you, but would mean a lot to me: please join the facebook group "Roosevelt Tulane," and then invite at least a couple of your friends, if not all of them. This is a great simple way for us to figure out who This is a great simple way for us to expand the number of people who know about Roosevelt.
