The Center on Poverty and Economic Opportunity at the University of Chicago is committed to the alleviation and eventual elimination of poverty in the United States. Poverty tears at America's economic, social, and political fabric, and it is the duty of this center and others to reinvigorate what is currently a pitiful national discourse on this pressing issue. America's strength rests on its ability to fulfill its ideals. Poverty must be alleviated and eventually eliminated to bring this country closer to the American promise of opportunity and justice for all its citizens.
