Policy interests: Energy, Sustainability Brian Payer was raised in a sleepy suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. He is currently Senior at Stanford University majoring in Chemical Engineering. Despite pursuing a rigorous technical degree, he remains keenly aware of the social implications and possibilities of science. He holds the idealistic belief that his engineering skills can be utilized to improve society and human life. Payer has previously worked on research projects with Biomedical Engineering, as well as in Bioethics, compiling a portfolio of papers ranging in scope from hardcore engineering analyses to abstract philosophical explorations. Environmental Engineering and Policy are also of keen interest to Payer, specifically the Energy sector. While studying abroad in Berlin, Germany during 2004, he studied the European Union’s approach to environmental issues. He returned to Berlin for the summer of 2005 and completed a research internship at a state-sponsored Institute for Water Ecology. Payer’s long-term goal is to facilitate the transfer of scientific findings and technological advances into sustainable, practical and effective public policies and behavior patterns. When not holed up behind piles of books, he seeks diversion through running, volunteering with the Catholic Community, and partaking in general college-kid mischief.
