Gilbert Martinez
School: Stanford University Member of: Center on Education and Learning Gilbert Martinez grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He received a bachelor's degree in physics, with a minor in mathematics and philosophy, at the University of Washington. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the biophysics program. At the University of Washington he did research in mathematical biology as well as experimental physics and was a Mary Gates Research Fellow. He spent a summer working in the Experimental COndensed Matter Physics group at the University of Chicago. While at Stanford he has been co-chair and chair of BioMASS (BioMedically Affiliated Stanford Students), a founding member of BioAIMS (Biomedical Association for the Interests of Minority Students), a student member of the Committee on Graduate Admission and Policy in the School of Medicine. He has served on several strategic planning committees for projects within the School of Medicine. He is currently the domestic policy editor for the Stanford Progressive and chair of the Political Action Committee for the Stanford Democrats. Since he was in high school he has been a tutor and mentor for underprivledged and at risk students. His policy interests are reflective of his time spent with talented but often overlooked students. His main policy interests are in education and economic opportunity as well as the role of science and technology in global economies.
