"If a man does not have an ideal and try to live up to it, then he becomes a mean, base and sordid creature, no matter how successful."

— Teddy Roosevelt

Lauren Young

School: Stanford University

Member of:
Center on International Security

Lauren Young came to Stanford from Saratoga, California, and she is currently a junior majoring in International Relations and Economics. She is a graduate of Summer Research College 2004 and has continued to work as a research assistant for Michael Tomz in the Political Science department. She is the financial officer of Stanford Mock Trial and the captain of her team, and she was a member of the team that placed in the top ten in the nation last year. She is also an internationally published poet. Her research for Joseph McNamara of the Hoover Institution increased her interest in the "war on drugs,” and she is also interested in education and international development and governance. This summer, she is going to Africa through an organization called Project FORGE to implement a project of her own design to teach rhetoric and creative writing in a refugee camp run by the United Nations. Her career plans vaguely involve working for the UN in a field related to international law and diplomacy.
