"Be practical as well as generous in your ideals. Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground."

— Teddy Roosevelt

Marie Jonas

School: Stanford University

Member of:
Unassigned

Upon arriving at Stanford Marie got involved in the Stanford Democrats. Since then her involvement in politics has expanded. She worked with the group to get students excited about the election and join in the effort to defeat Bush.

In addition to school involvement, this summer she worked for the DNC doing door to door fundraising. Although not the most technically challenging work, it gave her valuable organizational experience, as well as face to face contact with many voters.

Her interests are varied, but many of her concerns focus on women's issues, including birth control access, abortion rights, and women in politics. Most of her classes have not emphasized these issues; however in a writing class she was able to develop a feminist magazine. This magazine allowed her to approach the issue of feminism on a variety of fronts with fellow classmates. This also led to in depth research on the topic of Abstinence only education, something which is directly effecting thousands of young women across this country today.
Now president of the Stanford Democrats Marie hopes to bring politics closer to the student body, and involve more people directly in the process. She hopes to continue her political involvement through and beyond her college years -- perhaps with a future in office.
