Emmett Hopkins is currently studying urban environmental issues and land-use planning at Stanford University, and plans to graduate in 2006 with both a bachelors degree and a masters degree from Stanford's Earth Systems Department. He grew up among the hills and vineyards of rural Sonoma County, and later moved to Ojai, California for a four-year stint at the Thacher School. Since arriving at Stanford, he has worked closely with management of Stanford Dining Services to implement waste reduction, increase use of local organics, and evaluate overall sustainability performance. He has studied public transportation systems in China and France, ecological edge effects at the Tambopata Research Center in the Peruvian Amazon, and sustainable building practices at the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency. Particularly focused on improving urban vitality, his research interests lie primarily in transportation systems, energy-efficient buildings, and urban planning.
