Kaitlin Arena
School: Stanford University Member of: Center on the Environment and Energy Center on International Development Kaitlin Arena is a freshman and plans on majoring in Human Biology with a concentration on public health policy. She grew up in Redmond, Washington, witnessing the housing boom associated with the growth of Microsoft and the tech industry in general. She understands housings often negative effects on the environment and the ramifications of using non-environmentally friendly products. She strives to promote the use of recycled materials, especially composite roofs over cedar shakes, while hoping to improve the aesthetics and desirability of such products. Land use and suburban sprawl are major concerns to her as well. Kaitlin is currently the environmental representative for her dorm and spends her free time pestering her friends to recycle and showing them how. She loves music, especially Dave Matthews Band, whom she respects for their views on the environment and their fundraising efforts. She spent the summer before her senior year in Thailand, doing community service, homestays, backpacking, and a meditation retreat. Kaitlin yearns to go back there to assist in the rebuilding of the areas affected by the tsunami.
