Policy interests: Energy, International development

My name is Shannon; I'm a second year student studying Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations, and a minor in Environmental Studies (a mouthful, I know).  Next year I'm studying abroad in Dublin, where I hope to learn a lot about the Ireland/Northern Ireland conflict (over a good dark ale at a local pub).  For now, the plan is to go to law school after I graduate, and do international environmental law, hopefully in D.C.  But who knows, I may never come back from Europe :-)

Currently, I am the chair of the UC San Diego chapter of CALPIRG (California Public Interest Research Group), and I serve as the National Student Forum secretary for PIRG as well, working on such issues as global warming, hunger and homelessness, and affordable education.  Through PIRG, I've had the amazing opportunity to lobby in D.C. and to organize two student trips to New Orleans.

I am also a founding member of the UCSD Center for Social Progress, which is an organization dedicated to bringing student groups and individuals together to work on issues collaboratively.  I serve as the Operations Branch coordinator for CSP.  Right now, we are working on immigration issues, as well as institutionalizing CSP on our campus.  (I found out about the Roosevelt Institution because I was at a conference with the group that gave a grant to CSP--I think it's organizers' karma.)

I am also the Director of Communications for Marshall College at UCSD, am working on the Global Night Commute Committee to organize with Invisible Children, am the Interim Civic Engagement Director for our Volunteer Connections office, and I was the Publicity Chair for Marshallpalooza (a college festival).

After hearing about the Roosevelt Institution, I want to start a chapter at UCSD: possibly housed as a branch under CSP for awhile until we can get it on its feet.  Who knows how that will work out; things tend to take on a life of their own with only a little push from the right people.  For now, I'm interested in learning more about the organization and how we can be supportive of what Roosevelt is doing in general.

Much love and solidarity--let's rock this thing.
