Smoot transferred to LSU from the College of William and Mary in his Freshman Year in college to participate in the decathlon. In 2006, Smoot played a role in LSU's run for a national title, as the Tigers finished 2nd to University of Texas in the NCAA National Championships. He has since changed sports and competes in Olympic Weightlifting under 2004 Athens Olympics Head Coach, Gayle Hatch. As the President of The Roosevelt Institution @ LSU, Smoot has headed up efforts to promote a better understanding of the public policy process and proper discourse on national issues. He has also founded The LSU Visionary Institute, a group providing public policy research to assist Louisiana elected officials and legislators in reaching their public policy goals. Passionate about politics, political theory, and education, Louisiana is a haven for Smoot. While at LSU, he plans to institute programs promoting higher-level educational opportunity for Louisiana residents. He hopes to study political theory at Oxford following his undergraduate experience, in order to understand higher level political thought and how Louisiana politics can be reformed for the betterment of the State.   The Roosevelt Institution is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national think tank devoted to bringing students' policy ideas to the policy process.
