I was born in Madrid, Spain to Portuguese parents in 1987. In 1997, my dad, being a Portuguese diplomat, was transfered to Pretoria, South Africa, where I lived for 7 years, and grew a big attachment to the continent and the people. I started at the University of Maryland on Spring 2005, and even though I was expecting some integration issues, I did not expect the culture clash to be so severe. The culture of indiffirence, extreme nationalism, political polarization, surprised me then, and with their increase, it surprises me still. I looked for some beacon of light, some sign of intellectual revolutionaries, people who would not submit to the dictatorial teachings instilled by the media, the politicians, and worst of all, the people. I am tired of being told what to wear, what to drink, what religion to believe in, what political party to support, how to think, what to say, what to do. I hope you all feel as I do, that this institution is not only here to improve and increase our networking. It is here to act as a catalyst for a generation that needs free, open-minded ideas, so that we can all fulfil our potential. I am tired of waiting for change. Let us show what our generation is capable of...
