Martha Carolina Peña, 20, a native of Ecuador, immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10 with her mother and younger brother. She attended Covenant Life School, a private high school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on a need-based scholarship graduating with a 4.0 GPA. Upon graduation Carolina was the Journalism gold medallion recipient in Philadelphia for the 2005 Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards.

 

Since 2003 she has been the host of Generación Latina, a cable television show for Latino youth in Montgomery County and contributes to the youth beat of Revista Buena Gente, a local magazine. In her spare time she is a motivational speaker at local Latino youth conferences and workshops.

Carolina is a graduate of the Montgomery Scholars Program, a highly-selective honors program at Montgomery College. As one of the 25 students selected for the program, she studied at the International Relations summer seminar of the University of Cambridge, England. This fall of 2007 she will continue to pursue a degree in Public Communication and International Relations at American University.

Carolina is a part-time employee for Park and Associates, a public relations firm.  Her experience includes Hispanic media outreach and production work for live and pre-recorded shows, including the Hispanic Heritage Awards (NBC and Telemundo), Latin Grammys (CBS), and New Year's Eve Live from Times Square (Fox) as well as year-round programs with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.
