NORTON, MA (Aug. 30) -- Professor Jerry Murphy of the Wheaton political science department will teach a brand-new experimental course in policy creation during the Spring 2007 semester.

The Roosevelt Institution chapter at Wheaton College is working with Murphy to develop the course's mission and syllabus, as well as in recruiting students who want to take advantage of this unique, exciting opportunity.

Murphy has long been active in the national policy community. He currently serves as a member of the Policy Roundtable of the Democratic Leadership Council, which launched President Clinton's successful bid for the White House.

The course will explore how policies are formulated on four different levels, taking a separate look at city, state, national, and global policies.

After learning the basics, students will be able to focus on the policies in which they are most interested, from climate change to refugee rights.

"I am thrilled that Wheaton's Roosevelt chapter is helping in giving all Wheaton students this opportunity to learn how policy happens at all levels from a man with as much experience and knowledge as Professor Murphy," said chapter president Ted Nesi '07.

"Professor Murphy knows how policy really works," said chapter vice-president Genevieve Scoville '08. "Not just how it gets written, but how it gets implemented. And this is a fantastic chance for Wheaton students to learn from him."

Among his many accomplishments, Prof. Murphy served as the former Vice President of Urban Development and Vice President of Government Affairs at the Siemens Corporation; the President of J. L. Murphy & Associates; a Senior Public Policy Consultant for the Energy Research Group; Manager of Government Affairs at the Boston Edison Company; and President of Boston Harbor Associates.

He also served as Executive Director of Massachusetts Governor Francis Sargent’s Task Force on Metropolitan Development.
