Center on Public Health

The Center on Public Health provides a forum for innovative student research into the problems facing our healthcare system, such as access, cost, and quality of care. Each meeting meetings has three main goals: (1) to coordinate the center�s current research projects, (2) to discuss and educate members about particular aspects of health policy, and (3) to connect members with the resources to further their engagement in health issues. Outside of the weekly meeting we provide opportunities to meet distinguished professors and community leaders concerned with public health issues. Also, we can help coordinate publication of research with the PH: The Yale Journal of Public Health and other publications.

Past Research Projects:

• In recent years, major questions have arisen concerning the efficacy of health insurance mandates, which laws passed by state legislature that require health insurance providers to cover specific healthcare services. Supporters of mandates claim the mandates are necessary to prevent insurers from providing inadequate coverage and to ensure patients receive cost-saving preventive healthcare. Opponents argue that mandates make healthcare more costly, less efficient and increase the number of uninsured patients. There are literally billions of dollars and the health of millions of people at stake in this debate.
  
  In response to this issue, the Connecticut state legislature has asked Roosevelt PH to produce a report with recommendations on how to assess the effectiveness of health insurance mandates in Connecticut. We will begin our research by examining how previous effectiveness studies have been done elsewhere in order to determine the standards that a study in Connecticut will have to meet. Next, we will work with the State Healthcare Advocate, insurance companies within the state and healthcare professionals to create a protocol for conducting mandates studies in Connecticut. Finally, we will use our protocol to provide a preliminary analysis of several mandates and present our findings with our recommendations to the state legislature.

   

   

• New Haven Youth Health Survey

  Roosevelt PH will be developing and running a health survey project in a number of New Haven schools, gathering information from students, parents and educators about a variety of health issues. We will also aim to learn about the community, environmental and social factors that affect health in New Haven. We will use the survey to gain insight about the health of children in New Haven and to make informed suggestions to those who have participated in the survey and to local government. This project has the potential to be full of all of the best things that Roosevelt has to offer: productive interaction with the community we live in, a chance to do original research and use that research to arrive at important conclusions, the opportunity to play an active role in our local government and of course, a great way to get to know some fantastic Yalies.
