Recent Research Felon Voting Rights Presentation Fall 2005 The Center on Social Issues has tackled three projects this semester. The first is a paper on felon voting rights. The paper concentrates on possible legal reforms (such as parole officer education), various interpretations of the Federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the relationship between felon disenfranchisement and recidivism. A final draft of this project will be finished in time for a presentation at CCSU in mid-January. The second policy piece deals with affirmative action. This concentrates on the potential applicability of socioeconomic affirmative action as an alternative to race-based programs. This paper deals more with examining constitutional issues and Supreme Court decisions in order to test the potential merits and failings of both possible programs. The final project regards marriage equality, and focuses on the financial benefits of allowing gay marriage, as well as a comparison of legal rights covered by marriage as compared to a civil union. The center will finish all three of these projects by the end of January 2006 and then consider topics of specific interest to New Haven, including immigration and labor issues.
